Scrap metal thief apprehended after chase through woods – Dec. 12, 2010

Wayland Post troopers arrested a man on multiple charges and a couple of outstanding warrants after a lengthy foot chase through a wooded area with a canine team.

Troopers were dispatched to a Hopkins-area storage complex for a report of a larceny in progress. The owner of the complex had caught a man attempting to steal scrap metal.

The suspect fled the area on foot and troopers tracked him to a nearby home, where he was supposed to be with his 6-year-old stepdaughter. When troopers arrived at the scene, the man fled into the woods with his stepdaughter.

A canine team was requested and tracked the two individuals to a home two miles away, where the girl was located.

The male suspect was not there, but the canine team was able to find him after a lengthy track. He was taken into custody on charges of larceny, third-degree child abuse and for two outstanding warrants.

The suspect was lodged at the Allegan County Jail.
