Observant trooper foils theft ring – Jan. 25, 2010

While walking in downtown Detroit, a plain-clothes detective trooper observed a subject sitting in a construction vehicle with a screwdriver in his hand. The trooper also noted the vehicle had a punched ignition, likely indicating it was stolen.

The trooper returned to his car and followed the construction vehicle as it drove away.  While following the vehicle, the trooper called the construction company and learned the description of the subject and the location of the vehicle did not match the information provided by the company. The trooper followed the vehicle to a residence in Detroit and then contacted the Detroit Police Department.

Detroit officers arrived on scene within five minutes — just in time to observe the subject removing items from the vehicle and carrying them into the residence. Following a foot chase, the subject was taken into custody. A search of the residence resulted in the recovery of a large amount of stolen construction equipment.
