The Western Wayne Auto Theft Unit, with assistance from the Detroit and Livonia police departments, executed five search warrants at two residences and three businesses in the Metro Detroit area on this date. These search warrants were the result of an eight-month investigation involving the theft of tires and rims. Probable cause for the search warrants was developed through surveillance, confidential informants and the undercover sale of tires/wheels. Officers arrested four suspects and recovered 30 sets of stolen tires and wheels (120 tires/wheels), eight stolen navigational systems and two guns.
The following day, officers executed two additional search warrants at tire shops in Ferndale and Redford Township. Seized in the raids were 445 stolen tires/rims that nearly filled a 53-foot trailer.
The investigation is ongoing at this time.
