The View from the Air – Dec. 18, 2009

The MSP maintains a helicopter in southeast Michigan referred to as Trooper 2.  Trooper 2 was out of service for training recently, but it didn’t take long to get back into the action. As soon as Trooper 2 was airborne, a long river of headlights on eastbound I-94 at Moross was observed; the backup extended all the way to I-75.  Trooper 2 notified Metro Dispatch of the accident blocking the freeway and troopers were sent to the scene.

From there , Trooper 2 spotted a house fire north of the airport, with fire trucks en route.  Next, they were called up to Southfield to assist the Southfield Police Department with a robbery alarm. Trooper 2 was the first to arrive, and it was determined the alarm was set off accidentally.

Following that call, Trooper 2 received a report of a woman shot inside a residence and then another shooting in Detroit, Wyoming near Beechdale. From the air, Trooper 2 observed a male laying face down on the sidewalk next to a vacant lot, and a white van and the driver’s door open. Trooper 2 illuminated the area for responding officers and then began searching for the suspect vehicle – a blue van with a spare tire on back.  The van was not located, but another busy night in the air over southeast Michigan was concluded.
